Learn How Your Thoughts and Attitude Impact Your Cancer Journey
Are your thoughts and attitude affecting your health and cancer journey?
What are you thinking right now? Are your thoughts positive or negative? Are your thoughts dreary or dark? Is fear of the future for you and your loved one weighing on your heart and mind? If they are negative thoughts, those thoughts and fears are impacting your cancer journey.
You are what you think and focus on. If you take the stance that the doctor told you that you have 6 weeks to live, and you believe that with your mind and heart, it will speed up your death. If you focus on dying rather than living, you will probably die sooner. If we give up, our body and immune system give up. There are many cases where people lived months and years longer than the doctor’s prognosis. People are beating their cancer prognosis!
Attitude Matters! Your thoughts matter!
I took care of many patients for several years who outlived their prognosis. Many of them did quite well until almost the end. They just refused to give in and kept fighting.
The patients with the strongest belief that they would overcome the cancer lived longer. My father-in-law, as an example, lived for over 9 years with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. He knew about the diagnosis and continued to do what he loved, which was to play golf. He was not treated for CLL because he was 94 and his liver and kidneys were compromised by his drinking. He got no treatment until the last 6 weeks of his life with either standard medicine or holistic medicine. He got palliative care for the last 5 weeks. He was in very little pain, even 5 weeks before he died. In the end, his platelets tanked to almost zero, which caused him to bleed to death internally. He had already refused to eat. His attitude was that if he had to eat baby food, not hamburgers, he was done… He played golf until 6 weeks before he died. He said if he couldn’t play golf, there was no reason to live. He simply gave up when he couldn’t play his beloved game. He lived to 94, drinking and eating a bad diet as well. He was a pistol…a retired lieutenant commander.
Faith, age 82, did not have cancer but had been hit by a car while walking half blind. Her daughter told me that she had rarely been sick all her life, could get dental work done without anesthesia, was fit, and ate a strict vegetarian diet. Her family called her weird. They admitted she was healthier than the rest of the family. She lived by herself, half blind, until her hip fractured. She was in my care for several months. The family then put her in a nursing home where the staff would not let her eat her vegetarian diet, or live the way she believed. She was dead in 6 weeks. She gave up.
An old man at our church was told he had one year to live, but it has now been 6 years since they told him that. He walks into church without a walker and is doing better than some of the younger ones.
I worked in a nursing home as a private caregiver for a rich couple. She was at death’s door for most of the year I took care of them. Her husband had no known disease except a failing memory. He was a rude man to the staff. He didn’t approve of how they were treating her, and he was right. He made the staff mad. I made the staff mad because I spoke about the mistreatment and the abuse that goes on in these places. He was forced to give up his independent living in the facility and was put into the lockdown section, which he did not deserve, and gave up. The family let me go because they stated I was keeping her alive longer with the extra care I provided. The daughter hated her mother. Her hate and wanting her mother dead sooner rather than later caused her father to just give up. He loved his wife and was living for her. They gave up and both died within a month of the family letting me go. They died feeling abandoned. I have seen the best in humanity and some of the worst in nursing homes and people at death’s door. The simple joy I gave them, taking them away from their room into the sunlight, gave them joy. Showing her pictures and magazines, even though she was non-verbal at that point, made her eyes light up. I made her feel cherished. Make your loved one who is sick or dying feel cherished and important.
Giving up will speed up your death, whether it be from old age or cancer.
Strive to either outlive your prognosis or overcome your cancer. If you fail, then concentrate on just enjoying those last months.
It is known that if you believe in your treatment, whether it be holistic or standard medicine, you will live longer than if you do not have faith in your treatment outcome.
Let go of past anger and hate.
Forgive yourself and those who have hurt you.
That anger and hatred fuel disease and death. I have seen patients die angry with hate, and it is not a peaceful death. You may not believe in God, but patients who have a strong faith die more peacefully.
Making peace with your past and memories will help you beat cancer!
