Learn how Blessed Thistle and Burdock in Essiac Tea support and detoxify your liver function while fighting cancer.
I think it’s essential to understand why Essiac, containing both blessed thistle and burdock, is such a valuable tonic to give your liver the support it needs during cancer treatments.
Your liver is the largest solid organ in your body. If your liver goes, you die. That is how important it is. The liver’s job is to detoxify your blood, help with digestion, and restore your energy level. Every medication you take, whether holistic or standard medicine, goes through the liver in the processing. Some of those medicines are very harsh on the body.
Medicines that can harm your liver function!
“Many medicines you are taking are toxic to your liver, including Tylenol or acetaminophen; Antibiotics, especially Augmentin and Isoniazid, NSAIDs, like diclofenac, Allopurinol (Zyloprim); Anti-seizure medications, like phenytoin, valproic acid (Depakene), carbamazepine (Tegretol), and lamotrigine (Lamictal); Azathioprine (Imuran) is a medication that intentionally suppresses the immune system; Methotrexate is most often used to treat cancer and autoimmune conditions;
Many cancer medications — including chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and hormonal agents — can cause liver issues. Pembrolizumab (Keytruda) and nivolumab (Opdivo) are two examples.
Risperidone is a medication used to improve mood, thoughts, and behavior for people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Almost all antifungal medications have some potential to cause liver injury. Fluconazole (Diflucan) is the most common antifungal medication found to cause liver damage.” Good RX website
Fenbendazole is processed through the liver. That is why you need to get liver function tests every couple of months. Most people using Fenbendazole do not see liver enzymes go up when taking dandelion, blessed thistle, and or milk thistle along with it. Most protocols about taking Fenbendazole include dandelion and milk thistle for liver support.
Alcohol and sugar are also hard on the liver!
This is why it is SO important to protect your liver.
Blessed Thistle (cardo santo, holy thistle, cnicus benedictus)
Blessed Thistle has been used since the Middle Ages, when ancient people ate it like a vegetable. It was also utilized as a general tonic to treat many different kinds of digestive, liver, gall bladder issues, jaundice, arthritis, fevers, and female menstrual issues.
Blessed Thistle, a Tonic for better Liver function!
Blessed thistle (cardo santo) is used as an ingredient in many herbal formulas to cleanse and detoxify the liver. It overall helps the liver to work effectively and efficiently.

Blessed Thistle supports digestion through its bitter compounds, which stimulate digestive juices to break down the foods you are eating. It helps people with cancer, particularly because their stomach is often upset by the cancer and the medications being given. It stimulates the appetite, which in cancer patients is important because they often don’t want to eat.
Blessed thistle contains Anti-Inflammatory Properties! Inflammation is part of all diseases and cancer as well.
Blessed Thistle supports your immune system through the polyacetylenes it contains. It also contains antioxidant properties, which protect your cells from free radical damage and toxins. Antioxidants help your body defend itself from cancer and disease.
Blessed thistle is antimicrobial, which means it kills harmful microbes found when infections and cancer are present in the body.
Burdock Root
Burdock is one of the important and primary herbs found in Essiac tea.
Burdock was historically used in Europe to purify the blood by cleansing the liver and body from toxins. It was used by many indigenous tribes here in North America as well for its medicinal values. They cooked and ate the roots as food. So, Burdock was eaten by all the early people in both Europe and North America.
Burdock contains Antioxidants, including quercetin, luteolin, and phenolic acids. Burdock can play a role in protecting cells from damage caused by oxidation.
Burdock root is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B6, manganese, potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus. It also contains some vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin B5, folate, and choline. It helps the body to fight off disease and supports it with valuable nutrients to recover.
Cautions:
You could be sensitive to these herbs or have an allergic reaction. These herbs could cause problems when taken with drugs your doctor might prescribe. They might upset your stomach. If you are pregnant or nursing, clear it with your doctor first. It is always a good idea to consult your doctor first before taking herbs!
“Interactions
Burdock may interact with some medications, such as:
Blood sugar–lowering medicines: Burdock lowers blood sugar and the need for insulin in animal models. 9 While data is limited, people who use blood sugar–lowering medicines for diabetes or other conditions should discuss using burdock with a healthcare provider before taking it. The combination may cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
Diuretics (water pills): Burdock is a natural diuretic that can increase urine output.5 Taking burdock with other diuretics, such as Lasix (furosemide), may cause dehydration.
Cancer medicines cisplatin, quercetin, and tamoxifen: Arctigenin, a part of burdock, may enhance the effects of these medicines.10” Very Well Health
If you visit Essiac testimonials, many people use Essiac during cancer treatment without issues. They usually stop the Essiac several days before and after a treatment. I would read the testimonials before making a decision. Thoroughly investigate Essiac for yourself, then make your decision. You will also find groups on FB who are using Essiac as part of their cancer protocol.
