Dealing with Family Who Are Against Your Alternative Medicine Lifestyle.
Are you considered the nut in your family because of your alternative medicine lifestyle..it's OK
After 40-some years in alternative medicine, I have experienced almost every negative reaction that is possible. Long ago, I developed a tough skin on the subject. It is important to know what you stand for and be proud of it. If you are going to go the alternative medicine route, be prepared for ignorance and bias.
Most of our whole church works for the hospital and is entrenched in the system. I have found, though, that there are a few who actually will give you an open mind. Our new pastor came from Mississippi, and there he foraged for Lion’s mane mushrooms and herbs. He came to visit us and quickly recognized my mullein and comfrey plants. I gave him plants as a housewarming gift. He often backs me up when I quietly talk about what we use for a certain program. I never push because it is like shoving a round peg into a square hole. I pick my times to suggest something. Family is harder to deal with.
I wear my herbalist badge and being different with pride, without regret or apology. I have learned to smile when they look at me with that look. It is ok because it is their problem, not mine. I do not argue with my family except on rare occasions; I let them be. I learned long ago, you cannot help anyone who has a shut mind, including family members. It is life and reality.
Your children or close family may not support your beliefs either, and that is their choice. Once your children are away from home and on their own, it is their decision what they do or don’t believe in. Often, it does not align with your views. If they get nasty and push it, stand up to them. I had to do it with my sister. If your beliefs are core to who you are and what you stand for, then it may cost you. I don’t share the same views on most subjects with my sisters, so we just talk about other things. They have the right to their views. We love each other despite having little in common. It is important to keep loving your family, even if you don’t like them at times. We have loved each other through differences in lifestyle, politics, religion, vaccines, and alternative medicine. There was a time it went a few weeks without talking, but in the end, we made up. I asked myself if the argument was worth never talking to her again. Was it worth ending our family relationship? If they died, would I regret my decision? Our argument was not to me.
If they refuse to associate with you, find your own tribe. You need to be strong. Our family is divided on the vaccine issue. They know we have not and do not intend to get any vaccines, including the flu shots. If they were to refuse us entrance to their house unless we got vaccines, we would not be going in. That is a hard one that many families have had to face. That decision is so painful for families. You have to do what is right for you. You have to realize you cannot please everyone. You may be doing it alone, so can you do that? I will leave this at that. How important are your beliefs to you? What are you willing to lose for those beliefs……..?
